Our History
1956
Edwin Johnson, David Johnson, and Ted S. Kendall form a partnership in Newtown, PA to offer Life and Property & Casualty insurance. This partnership would soon evolve into the incorporation of Johnson, Kendall & Johnson, Inc.
1965
Johnson Benna Inc. incorporates to focus on Life Insurance and Employee Benefits. Together, Johnson Benna and JKJ form The Johnson Companies.
1969
Under the direction of Richard Willis, JKJ partners with its first Senior Living client, launching what has become a nationally recognized specialty in the Senior Living industry.
1981
Under Ted Benna’s leadership, The Johnson Companies, sponsor the first 401(k) plan in the USA—a landmark in retirement planning still in place for JKJ employees today.
1990
Johnson Benna Inc. and Johnson Administrators merge with Noble Lowndes USA. JKJ separates from the merger and becomes a standalone entity owned by its management team.
1991
JKJ forms its first Agency-Owned Captive.
1994
Bruce R. White and John Wright restructure JKJ’s business model to integrate risk management consulting. They add the company’s first dedicated Safety Management Consultant and establish a dedicated Claims Management Department.
1996
JKJ becomes a founding partner of RiskProNet International.
JKJ forms JKJ Benefits to provide employers with value-added consulting and advisory services to optimize their employee benefits programs.
2000
JKJ launches the College Mentoring Program to hire, grow and promote future leaders at JKJ.
2010
JKJ University began as an annual educational event for Senior Living clients and now supports internal and external educational programs across all industries.
JKJ launches Health Matters, its wellness program designed to help employers foster healthier workplaces and manage healthcare costs through tailored well-being strategies.
2011
JKJ Financial Services grows out of the merger between JKJ and the Lee / Malarkey financial services practice, continuing a legacy of service to clients since 1934.
JKJ creates JKJ Retirement Services, re-establishing JKJ as a leader in the Employer-Sponsored Retirement Plan space.
2013
JKJ partners with the Philadelphia Eagles.
2016
As a Member / Owner of M Financial Group, JKJ Financial Services helps launch the industry’s first multi-carrier “eUnderwriting” platform, enabling life insurance policies to be issued in days—or even minutes—without traditional exams or underwriting requirements.
2017
JKJ introduces “Passion with a Purpose,” a community service initiative offering employees paid time off to support our community, our clients’ communities, and causes they’re passionate about.
2018
JKJ joins TechAssure, a leading global network of independent insurance and risk management experts specializing in technology-related risks and innovation-driven industries.
JKJ partners with the Philadelphia Union.
2019
JKJ acquires Amusement Entertainment Risk Insurance Associates (A.E.R.I.A.), which specializes in coverage for the amusement and entertainment industry.
2022
Sigel Insurance merges with JKJ.
JKJ joins closely held and member governed international, independent broker network WING. Reinforcing JKJ’s commitment to supporting independent brokers globally.
JKJ and the Philadelphia Eagles announce partnership extension.
2023
JKJ Partners with ECRI to provide comprehensive clinical risk management services to our senior living clients.
2024
JKJ joins Assurex Global, the world’s largest privately-held commercial insurance, risk management, and employee benefits brokerage group.
2025
JKJ Named a Best Evergreen Company by the Tugboat Institute
