Prioritizing Mentally Safe Workplaces for World Mental Health Day
Oct 9, 2025
World Mental Health Day is observed annually on October 10 to raise awareness of mental health issues and promote efforts to improve mental health care and support worldwide. First initiated in 1992 by the World Federation for Mental Health, the day has evolved into a global movement supported by the World Health Organization (WHO) and many advocacy groups.
Each year, World Mental Health Day focuses on a specific theme. Previous themes have included Mental Health as a Universal Human Right, Mental Health Promotion and Suicide Prevention, and Young People and Mental Health in a Changing World.
Last year’s theme, Mental Health at Work, highlights the critical role of mental well-being in the workplace. Regardless of location or industry, everyone deserves access to mental health support at work. While some organizations are still catching up, we at JKJ continue to witness the powerful impact of employers who prioritize mental health benefits for their teams.
According to WHO, poor mental health costs the global economy an estimated $1 trillion annually in lost productivity. Additionally, 46% of Gen Z and 45% of millennial workers report feeling burned out due to work-related pressures. It’s no surprise that 81% of workers say they will seek out employers who offer meaningful mental health support in the future.
Investing in workplace mental health isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s smart for business. Supporting mental well-being helps retain talent, boosts engagement, and fosters a healthier, more productive environment. From Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) to virtual therapy platforms like Tava Health, there are many tools available to provide employees and their families with easy access to care.
As we recognize World Mental Health Day, this is the perfect opportunity to remind your teams about the mental health benefits your organization provides. Encourage open conversations about mental well-being and make sure employees know how to access the support already available to them. If your current benefits aren’t hitting the mark, now is the perfect time to explore innovative solutions.
