Why is Insurance Important?

With the holiday season fast approaching, thoughts turn to family and friends. While decorating your home and visiting loved ones, it’s important to remember that taking proper safety precautions and having appropriate insurance can help make your holiday more enjoyable and memorable. Without proper insurance, you may be stuck dealing with issues that can make the best of holidays not the best of times.

The following statistics are sure to send a shiver down the informed insurance buyer’s spine:

Fire for thought:

Per the National Fire Protection Association, in 2013, on average, a fire department responded to a residential fire roughly every 85 seconds. Between 2007 and 2011, U.S. Fire Departments responded to an estimated annual average of 230 home structures fires that began from Christmas trees. These home Christmas tree fires caused an average of 6 civilian deaths, 22 civilian injuries, and $18.3 million in direct property damage. Make sure your tree is well watered, your lights in good order, and your insurance up to date!

Deer in the headlights:

In 2013, Pennsylvania was ranked 5th in the country for Deer-Vehicle Collisions, behind West Virginia (1), Montana, Iowa, and South Dakota. This means that PA residents have a 1/76.5 chance of getting in to a collision with a deer every time they are on the road. This risk is amplified during mating season, which occurs around the same time as several major winter holidays. Be careful when you drive, especially in remote or in deer prone areas!

Uninsured and Uninformed:

As of 2013, Pennsylvania had roughly 12.8 million residents. Of those 12.8 million people, nearly 7% were without auto insurance protection. That’s about 896,000 reasons to protect yourself and your family with an automobile insurance policy complimented with Uninsured and Underinsured Motorists protection. Watch out for the other operators, and make sure your coverage limits will respond as needed!

For some, this is a reminder of the issues to which your insurance can respond. For others, this is a call to action to revisit the Safety and Risk Management techniques for your home and auto exposures. Insurance plays a vital role in preserving your assets. It is always a good time to review your risks and exposures and align them with an insurance program that’s right for you.
